In Germany, the Bundeswehr tank was criticized for a similar name to the Wehrmacht
Retired German General Klaus Wittmann, in an interview with the Welt channel, criticized the new tank of the German army – the Bundeswehr – for the name “Panther”, since the Wehrmacht armored vehicle bore the same name during the Second World War.
“I don’t think it’s very smart to call this tank exactly the same as the Wehrmacht tank model, which played a big role against the Russian, then Soviet, T-34s in World War II,” the military emphasized.
Wittmann added that the car currently exists only as a demonstration model and will not soon fall into service with the German army.
Earlier in March, German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht announced plans for a large-scale modernization of the Bundeswehr in order to restore the army’s defense capability. “For the sake of security that can be seen and felt, we need a significant increase in our efficiency,” she said.
